UNESCO celebrates disability inclusion manual at NIMCA meeting in Tanzania
Opening remarks by Michel Toto, UNESCO Representative for the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA) meeting on 16 September 2024
Chairperson of the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA), Mr. Ernest Sungura,
Distinguished members of the Board,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am very pleased to address you today at this important gathering of the Network of Independent Media Councils in Africa (NIMCA). As media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion, fostering democratic dialogue, and advancing human rights, it is crucial that it reflects the diversity of the societies it serves.
As you convene to finalise key elements of your strategy and operational functions, I urge you to address a matter of critical importance: promoting gender and disability inclusion within media institutions across Africa.
The media, as a catalyst for social transformation, must ensure that the voices of women, persons with disabilities and other marginalised groups are not only represented but also actively involved in shaping narratives that uphold equality, dignity and respect.
I particularly encourage you to utilise, adapt and share throughout this important Africa regional network, UNESCO’s Practical Manual and Masterclass Video Series on Disability Equality in the Media, recently released and accessible.
UNESCO is committed to supporting the transformation of media institutions, ensuring they embrace principles of inclusivity and representation. By embedding gender and disability inclusion in media institutions, we can foster a more equitable and just society where all voices are represented and all stories are told.
I wish you fruitful discussions ahead and look forward to the steps we will take together to drive meaningful change across the African media sector.
Thank you. Asanteni sana.
